This course provides the key concepts, safety techniques, and communication skills for peace officers to use when they respond to individuals in a severe mental health crisis. It covers the legal aspects of mental health commitments, liability issues, mental disorders, and mental disabilities. In addition, it deals with various developmental disabilities, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and hearing impairments. Other areas covered include indicators of mental illness, understanding mental illness, documenting the interpersonal relations necessary to work with the mentally ill, and their families effectively, and the mental health system intervention strategies for dealing with low and high-risk situations.
Based on the principals of Gen Sun Tzu in the Art of War , the class explores the use of de-escalation techniques. Treating all human beings with Dignity and Respect is the first step to de-escalating any conflict. The course focuses on recognizing the signs of mental illness and the signs preceding an escalation of behavior. A majority of incidents can be averted by recognizing that our own biases and feelings are triggers and attempting to de-escalate while treating the other party with dignity and respect. The impact of physical restraint or altercations is costly in both personal injuries and litigation. Course principles are reinforced through the use of scenarios for practical application. “The Supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting”-Sun Tzu
